Is it a Megaphone?

Is it a Megaphone?

The ‘Megaphones’ appear to be an eponym but they’re actually speakers. One of the ideas behind the Megaphones was to bring back “nobility” to the object: let’s replace the cheap electronics with hi-fi components. Let’s replace the plastic with wood but let’s keep the iconic shape. The final product is unique and has a distinct Dutch quality to it. Love the craftsmanship.

Bright Humidity

Bright Humidity

The Host Lamp is designed to accommodate a fully integrated passenger appliance, a small humidifier. The principle of the host lamp is very simple – wasted heat energy emitted by the lightbulb is captured and converted to electricity by TGMs(thermo-electric modules) and used to power the humidifier.

Hose Without the Guilt

Hose Without the Guilt

Feel guilty about hosing your car or watering the lawn? What if you could juice up some AA’s in the process? Check out the Great Barrier – a mini generator fixed to your hose and in turns charges up a battery . This power is stored in an AA cell, the most commonly used size in the world. Okay, this isn’t exactly “green” by any means but hey, it’s kinda guilt-free right? Maybe?

Come Unplugged

Come Unplugged

I normally try and yank plugs out because I can’t be bothered with getting on my hands and knees. Frayed wires and many broken plugs later, I have finally found what I need, the Single Hand Socket Strip! Clearly inspired by  One-Hand Products, the strip has this unique tab that allows you to pull plugs single handedly without causing any damage to the head or wire.

Sit & Be Enlightened

Sit & Be Enlightened

The Satvic Lounge Series is an expression of pure equilibrium between mind & body, universe & self. Individual materials for each model carry a deep representation of the relationship between the user & their environment, e.g., the raw wood base met with the polycarbonate  seat represent the earth as being the only place a pure soul can be aware of it’s existence. I told you it was deep! The question to ask is not which one you like, but, which one you need.

A Light with a Story

A Light with a Story

When I was a kid there were always 2 things I needed to get to sleep: a bedtime story, and a nightlight. The Story Tent Light by Hong Ying Guo combines both into an interactive tent shaped projector, reminiscent of the forts and tents we all constructed growing up. By rotating the top section the Story Tent projects sequential light images through interchangeable frames to tell a brief animated story. This active design encourages using the imagination and provides tranquil light for a peaceful sleep; something both parents and children can enjoy together.

Not For Insectophobes

Not For Insectophobes

While visiting a natural history museum, designer Jingfeng Fang got inspired when admiring a piece of wood that had been devoured by worms. For this five drawer set  he used a drill to create a dynamic pattern imitating bug bites. I’m  not usually for something made to look “old”  or weathered  but this interesting and humorous design evokes the imagination of a past event with distinctive storytelling.

Rocker Stool Saves It's History

Rocker Stool Saves It’s History

The Rocker Stool by Hamish Tennent was designed to invoke a sense of play into it’s environment. The single slip cast ceramic exterior and cork cushion make for a simple and fun shape. Rocker Stool was designed to catch the viewer’s attention by shifting in the direction the last seated person leaned before standing, leaving the next user to ponder where the previous seater had ventured. The bottom of the inside is filled with black sand to aid in shifting and add stability.

Open Sesame!

Open Sesame!

Owning a personal refrigerator at work is not a new thing, and Particulate Food Fridge fits into that lifestyle perfectly. Only thing different is the way it looks; seems more like a lunchbox than a mini fridge. Functionally, it has these compartments that come up, grab your offering and store each according to the food groups. Check out the way the mouth of the fridge opens up; ready to devour its next meal!

Very Green Oil

Very Green Oil

The very muck that invades our pond and swimming pool is a goldmine! Actually, make that an oil well. I’m talking about algae and the potential to extract bio-oil from them. Green Transformer is a solar powered floating device that combines algae with a chemical additive and derives bio-oil on the spot. The consequent oil is stored in a separate chamber till someone comes and collects it all. I love the idea of making oil in my backyard!
