Pretty Little Battery Bike of Wood

Pretty Little Battery Bike of Wood

Check the heck out this little bike that runs on batteries. Not only is it aesthetically MORE than pleasing, it’s made out of a bunch of wood (and a bit of metal and plastic of course) and runs on tiny batteries you can carry around with you in your pocket! This is the Biona and it’s designed by Jordi Poblet Pedrol, a fellow who wants to replace gasoline entirely in our urban vehicles. This project attempts to give the world a brand new perception of what an electric motorcycle is.

Living Weights

Living Weights

Wait, weights? Weights. For lifting and getting totally strong. That’s what this project is all about. This is the Flourish Activity Monitor, a set of weights for exercise experience for the elderly. Each of these weights mimics the growth of a living plant in order to provide positive visual feedback for the person using the weights. The more these weights are used, the more they grow.

Phone with an Extra Squishy Surprise

Phone with an Extra Squishy Surprise

My generation (I’m 30′ish if you must know) will not understand the need to have a cool looking phone that allows you to browse the internet intuitively, but the millennial generation do and I suspect they would love the Trypoxy Phone. Looks like a smooth pebble but for the ultimate web browsing experience, the rear has a soft-gel-like grab extension that can pulled out. It fits snuggly in one hand and has built-in controls to pinch and squeeze your way through the internet with simulated buttons for scrolling and moving back/forth thru pages.

Making Yearly Calendars Obsolete

Making Yearly Calendars Obsolete

I am totally impressed with the Puzzle Calendar! What an ingenious idea with an easy to follow system. You simply keep shifting the tiles each month to keep pace with the changing days! You can even jot down notes on the side using a whiteboard marker. I’m so going to replace my desk calendar once this hits the market.

Mercedes-Benz Embraces Sculptural Experimentation

Mercedes-Benz Embraces Sculptural Experimentation

The designers at the big MB are pushing the limits of automotive design by embracing sculptural experimentation. It permeates every aspect of their design process, from collaborative sketches to workgroups. The resulting sculpture titled Aesthetics No. 2 is stunning – deceptively complex and being ingeniously organic. I can only image which future Mercedes-Benz interiors will benefit from this awesome workflow.

Don't Shred Your Paper - Disappear Your Ink!

Don’t Shred Your Paper – Disappear Your Ink!

Take a peek at this, paper shredder that doesn’t shred – this is the electromagnetic erasing system. The idea for this project came to the designer from observing the destructive effect of electromagnetic radiation on color pigments. Scary! This project aims directly at utilizing electromagnetic radiation in a fully controlled reaction inside a machine to break all bonds of color pigments that absorb only a particular range of the electromagnetic spectrum. What’s that mean? Maybe… reusable paper?

Electric No Seater on Two Wheels

Electric No Seater on Two Wheels

Behold one wacky bike for the further excellence of trick tracking across the X-Games world! The designer of this project has pulled out all the extras on this trick bike – even going so far as to remove the saddle seat! Because the designer recognizes that a bicycle is small enough to do some crazy tricks but limited by the power the rider can exert, while motorbikes have a bunch of power but are limited by their size, this project aims to cross the two.

The Tiniest Tron

The Tiniest Tron

So you like strips of bright light aside blackness, greenness, or grayness, yes? You must love the heck out of this Tron: Legacy wave of items coming out as of late! I know I love it. Not because all of them are good (excluding the one I’m about to show you, of course,) but because they’ve got that one singled-out limit that ties them all together. Let’s have a group show! Someday maybe. Now check this little thing out – it’s a Tron Ring!

Minimalist 3D Camera is All Smiles

Minimalist 3D Camera is All Smiles

If I came away with one one conclusion from this year’s CES, it’s 3D. For years companies have been talking about it but it seems 2011 is when it all comes to fruition and leading the initial wave are 3D cameras. The STEREOO concept gave us deja vu but this form factor and effervescent aesthetic is exactly what’ll get the general public excited about 3D. I love the minimalism and the humor of seeing a camera smiling back at you. The large display is capable of displaying 3D images and doubles as a touch interface. I want one now.

20 Questions with Benjamin Hubert

20 Questions with Benjamin Hubert

We met Benjamin Hubert at last year’s Electrolux Design Lab event and although familiar with his work, came away with even more respect. Born in 1984, Benjamin studied ID at Loughborough University graduating in 2006.  A year later he founded his own studio that includes a diverse range of furniture and lighting products. He’s laid back and has an awesome sense of humor so we decided to play 20 questions.

3D Glasses That Don't Look It

3D Glasses That Don’t Look It

It’s clear from this year’s CES how important 3D will be and that means 3D glasses. For the most part, they’re still quite “techie” looking and definitely not for the discerning fashionista. The Del Rey & Co. 3D classes draw upon the classic lexington shape, properly disguised as high-fashion specs.
