If you’ve got all your industrial design history in order, you’re aware of the magnificent Phillipe Starck. If you’re familiar with mister Starck, you might also be familiar with his awesome chair by the name of Mr Impossible – this chair is made entirely of transparent plastic and appears to be too wild to be true. Of course now we know that plastic can easily do such a thing, but back when it was invented, Mr Impossible really seemed impossible!

Sound in One Direction

Sound in One Direction

Are you interested in the sonic? How about the supersonic? How about the… ultrasonic. Behold what designer Adam Moller calls “Klang Ultrasonic Speakers,” a vision in gold and black. These speakers are a pair that emit low-level ultrasound from a node attached to a dish. When this happens, this node’s relative location to the focal point of the dish determines where the signal will spread.

Incompletion and Complete, For Sitting

Behold for before you is a couple of designer bits of furniture that require a bit of explanation before you can fully understand or appreciate them. First, it’s recognized that essentially, every bit of matter is both full and a piece of something larger than itself. In this vein of thinking comes a set of two (two for now, more for later) pieces of furniture with parts of their bits missing. One is a bench, the other a stool, both of them crafted to perfection.

Poppin’ Bottles

Küb is a bottle opener. Küb loves to entertain guests, but it also hates the mess they leave behind. It has an interior compartment with a slide-out lid that lets you store bottle caps until they can be discarded properly. Küb also has a deep-seeded need to fit in, which is why it is made of high-quality hardwoods and stainless steel so you can leave it out in your kitchen as an attractive accessory. By far the sexiest bottle opener.

Peel – Moving Notifier Concept is a clock with screens on 4 sides. Each of the screens can display text and imagary on both sides (face and back). Part of the screens (up to 50%) can be peeled off from the surface. It’s wirelessly connected to your computer and mobile phone – your calendar, schedule and emails are synced.

This Time it’s an HTC with a Cartridge

Antoine Brieux has an HTC fixation and I totally support his fascination. His HTC Tube concept is a killer as far design and specs go. It’s basically about splitting the phone into two segments, an outer shell and the inner cartridge. What this means is three variations (8, 16 & 64GB) are symmetric, but when it comes to the tech specs, it all depends upon the cartridge fitted. Feast on the beauty while I pray that HTC has a big enough heart to admire this concept!

USB Plug Goes Both Ways

In spite of the clear USB mark on its right side, many a times we carelessly try to shove in the USB plug from the wrong side. As a result we manage to damage the head. With the Double U USB port, this will never happen because either ways it’s the right side!

No Ordinary Ruler

I have been reading message boards for people who suffer from visual impairments and one discussion topic I found was how difficult it is to use rulers. The problem, especially with centimetres and millimeters, is that while the numbers on a ruler can be made bigger, the unit of measurement is fixed, so reading millimeters if you have problems with your sight becomes difficult.

Tiny Chairs and Tiny Stools

Let’s talk for a minute about a company by the name of Promemoria, a family owned institution that creates luxury furnishings that are fabulously fine quality and made under Italian design master Romeo Sozzi. This group is currently in the middle of an event called Maison&Objet 2011 in Paris, running (January 21st through the 25th,) and they’re presenting an installation called “World of Wonder,” featuring several tiny seats and such of true loveliness.
