CES 2011 Part 1

CES 2011 Part 1

I’m as giddy as a school girl at CES because I’m literally going to be living in the future for the next few days. The annual Consumer Electronics Show has so many products to offer that I’ll just play curator. Hit the jump!

A Laptop so Minimal, it Hides

A Laptop so Minimal, it Hides

If you thought Apple couldn’t possible simplify the aesthetics of the MacBook Pro line any further, take a look at the HIDE laptop. The ultra minimalist design hides all ports when closed. Aside from the small hinge and indentation to help lift the cover, it just looks like a solid aluminum block. It’s naive and utilitarian. I really like it.

An Analog Fan

An Analog Fan

I often like to guess what concepts are before reading descriptions because I enjoy the surprise in being totally off-base. This Analog Fan uses an old trick with gears and pulleys to generate enough power for 5 minutes of hair blowing wind. Not meant to cool a room down but it keeps air moving and all without electricity. By the way, I originally thought it was a clock.

Lock Thy Knife and Throw Away the Key

Lock Thy Knife and Throw Away the Key

Wait a minute there is no key involved here in the Knife Locker. Apparently the knife itself is the key. It locks into position with a 270-degree counterclockwise turn and kick starts the UV sterilization process. Ready for the next use, bright and shiny! That sleek house will look good on any kitchen counter, what do you think?

One Ring to Peel Them All

One Ring to Peel Them All

One can never have too many peelers because none are created equal. The Companion Ring Peeler slips onto the index finger. The outer ring peels the skin as you drag it across an apple. Will this form be good enough for tough skin fruits and veggies? Doubt it, but it looks like a practical companion for picnics and traveling. Will I buy one? totally!

iPhone Serpent Round My Neck

iPhone Serpent Round My Neck

The Vyne is quite an elaborate iPhone Stand, in fact I think its one of the most obvious ones I’ve seen. It has a flexible strap that coils into various forms… going round your neck like a snake charmer’s serpent to sitting pretty on your desk. The flexible elastomer neck and plastic clip secure your phone into place. Good for when you want to watch some videos on the phone. However, don’t even try using it while walking!

Dual Purpose LUMI Mask

Dual Purpose LUMI Mask

LUMI is the world’s first sleep mask that not only blocks light, but also simulates sunrise. It focuses on two strong sleep cues, darkness and light, to help you fall asleep with ease and wake feeling alert and refreshed. I think it’s brilliant. Designer Taylor Franklin Hide has already reached his goal of 10k but there’s still 17 days left. Pledge $50 or more and you’ll receive a LUMI Mask.

World Kitchen What’s Bubbling? Kitchen Tools! Design Competition

World Kitchen “What’s Bubbling? Kitchen Tools!” Design Competition

Update: Closed!

“Put that emotion in the food, because it’s so much more rewarding down the line”; says Hell’s Kitchen celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey. Cooking has become such a habitual ritual that we rarely put in the extra effort for gourmet meals. Blame it on time constrains or pressures of life, but home-cooking has undergone major transformations, demanding serious changes in our kitchen too.

TRON Lamp, Need I Say More?

TRON Lamp, Need I Say More?

It’s obvious what inspired this. I want it. I want it bad. The TRON Lamp uses bioluminescent polymers to emit the kind of glow Hollywood spent millions of dollars in Special FX. The light intensity can be set by rotating the disk. Power is transferred via brush contacts on the outer copper ring. Clever and very production ready.

Lit by Wind

Lit by Wind

Wind Bulb is a light powered by wind. Winner of the LiteOn Award,  it’s designed for apartment balconies in urban areas. The tiny propellor at the top generates enough power to keep the light on all night. Love the design and the application of renewable energy. Love that it’s easy to install too. No need to run power anywhere.

Walnut and Grass

Walnut and Grass

Designer Emily Wettstein uses reclaimed walnut and steel to craft this beautifully organic table. Love the rusted out legs juxtaposed by the lush planter. Not really my aesthetic but I appreciate the boldness. If I had one, I’d plant catnip and raise an army of cats.

Food Freshness

Food Freshness

Time Clock is an airtight container with a food-freshness meter attached. The lid features a clock-like dial which lets you know how long the food’s been stored in it. You’ll never let left overs spoil again, unless it was really nasty then by all means, let it spoil and make sure you give that restaurant a low YELP rating. Serve the community people.
