Oh Alex, how you’ve become my favorite water bottle these past few months. I didn’t think much of you at first but then I found out former Oakley team manager Chris Hotell and pro snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler founded the company who made you and I become intrigued. You’re so special. You do a lot but there’s two things you do better than anyone else baby.

Here’s an idea that’s almost there. The Droplet Traffic Light works like your standard fare but the opposite, inactive side displays the latest news blurbs and weather conditions. Okay WAIT A MINUTE. I need my thinking caps on because this must be designed for traffic systems that move in circular paradigms. Wouldn’t work in the States where traffic takes turns with cross-traffic. Novel idea though and love that it’s solar powered.

I’m usually pretty good about keeping my keys and travel chotchkies in one place. I’m ambivalent about tossing them in a bowl or hanging them by the door. Ugh, that’s the worse because it’s just a constant reminder of Los Angeles traffic every time I walk by. I digress. If I had something like the Blomp Coathanger – my issues would be alleviated. Love the receptacle to keep all your crap and hide them from view with a coat. Done and done. They look technical but it’s all handmade from poly-resin. Brills!

I’m enamored with two products by Japanese studio h220430. The Tokonoma is a display shelf of sorts that puts Japanese minimalism front and center. It’s different from the minimalism we’re used to seeing from the west which is often described as stark and cold. There’s something intrinsically warm about the Japanese variant. It’s subtle and enriches anything placed on top.

One extraterrestrial seat, that’s what we’ve got here. This is the “Oddbod Chair” by designer Javier Alejandre, a designer straight out of Madrid. This seat was selected to be shown at the Spanish Design Awards INJUVE 2010. In this chair Alejandre hopes to push the bounday between inert object and the outer limits of the imagination, especially along the lines of space exploration. Science fiction, futuristic, organic and lovely.

Here’s something rather spectacular. A very simple concept when it comes down to it, a rather long explanation if you’d like to take the time to understand the intricacy. What you’ve got here is a project called Inconspicuous Matter, a project involving electro reactive wallpaper. What does that mean in a nutshell? Wallpaper that LIGHTS UP!

Who loves alterations? We love alterations. Especially when they turn a Victorian house in a conservative area with access to the backyard garden only through a utility room between the basement and ground floors. It was just silly! Now it’s spectacular. Architect Tamir Addadi, quickly becoming a favorite of mine, took this space and transformed it into a modern masterpiece.

This Basic Dining Chair is inspired by the Korean letter shape “Zi-Ut.” There’s a playful balance between traditional Asian forms and Dutch mid-century cues. There’s something Eames-ish about it too and it’s one of those chairs that looks good from every angle. Just check out that profile. Gorge!

Designer Dan McCabe describes his “Two Faced” coffee table as strikingly modern and I totally agree. The juxtaposition between the austere stainless steel and ornate silicon bronze frame is very unique. There’s something creepy about it. Can’t quite put my finger on it but it beckons to be touched. I have earbuds from V-MODA so when they sent me the Crossfade headphones, I already knew I’d be dealing with quality. True to the brand, these bad boys look like no other. Their armored appearance instantly gives you that “I’m so serious about my music” look. Build quality is great for a $200 pair of headphones too. They’re heavier than your typical fare but are fully adjustable with very soft cushions. In fact they’re so thickly padded, they’re great for noise canceling. But how do they sound? You’ve got something important to do but your batteries are almost out of power. We’ve all been there and each of us has discovered ways to milk every ounce of power out of our devices. I’ve found power cycling my iPhone gives it a few more minutes, but what if someone could give your device a jumpstart? The Jump-Start CARD lets one device siphon off power from another. Yea, can’t decide if this is really useful.

Irons are either streamline and sleek or compact and portable. A handful are retro but the Ironbag goes one further and borrows from a woman’s handbag. It’s not the latest Balenciaga but the curious bag-like shape ingeniously tucks everything into one fashionable unit. It’s up to you to decide whether or not it’s sexist. Irons, women’s handbags? Hmm…

Most of the projects we post here at Yanko Design are posted due to both their excellence and their status as a conceptual project (aka, only in your mind, my young padawan.) Sometimes, on the other hand, we get a project submitted that’s right along on its way toward becoming a real live object or construction. This just happens to be one of those: designer Tamir Addadi presents a complex of offices, shops, and gardens being built right this moment in Nairobi Kenya.
