Four Dimensional Ultrasound for Non-Invasive Surgery

Four Dimensional Ultrasound for Non-Invasive Surgery

Sounds exciting! The problem the designer is trying to solve here is the fact that malpractice suits for minimally-invasive gallbladder removals are still prevalent. To deter this sort of situation, the designer aims to employ four dimensional ultrasound technology to better “see” the insides of the patient, including inside the bladder the surgeon is detaching. This 4D imaging is used currently to see real-time images of fetuses in the wombs of expectant mothers. What this device does it make that technology realistic for the operating table.

Sounds of Film Thins

Sounds of Film Thins

Behold a sound experience by designer Ji Young Shon. This is called Whispering Leaves, and it’s a multiple sound speaker system installation piece of artwork installed at the Royal College of Art. It is what Shon calls a new kind of sound system interface which utilizes film-thin speakers to create for you an environment of sound unlike any other. Each leaf has a different sound, varying slightly between the shapes, sizes, and bendings.

Holiday Clouds of Cuteness

Holiday Clouds of Cuteness

The cool people over at Centre International d’Art Verrier de Meisenthal have produced a limited edition Christmas Ball by the name of Cumulus. It’s a bunch of little clouds designed by Mendel Heit. Each year the CIAV chooses to work with a new young designer who then designs a unique piece for production in a limited edition. This year it’s a cute little cloud! This particular design invites you, the new owner of a tiny little cloud, to travel back to your childhood and hang out in your own imagination, up in the air.

Spoon For All Seasons

Spoon For All Seasons

The Clever Spoon is a really nifty tool to have around the kitchen. The video demo shows just how easy it is to measure different portions using this one tool. A quick slide up and down and you are ready to use! I love the fact that it completely disassembles for a thorough clean up!

Microwave Becomes A Lamp

Microwave Becomes A Lamp

Apparently mums in Korea prepare food and keep it hot for their children, using a babsang bo cloth. The Delicious Wave Microwave is fashioned on this premise and even doubles up as a lamp. It hovers above the dining table as a light fixture and can be pulled down to cover a plate of food to heat it. Quite an interesting visual to see the microwave disappear as a space-occupying appliance and become this functional two-in-one thang!

Time Table Mixer

Time Table Mixer

Would that this table were a time table! Oh, but it is. Partially recycled and partially newly made, this table is but a time table, taken here and there from points in design, oh the frankensteining is immense! Designer Jody Racicot uses rich mahogany (just like Ron Burgundy), teak, and ebony in his works, his works which use this old/new method and have most recently burst forth this magical end table. “I believe it is my obligation to make an object as useful as it is beautiful” he says, wielding bits of furniture like a master craftstman.

Crabby Booty

Crabby Booty

Your booty will be anything but crabby when it sits upon “The Hermit Crab Chair” by designer Joseph Kim. No way, says I, only happiness will be felt by your bottom relaxing in such a situation. In the same way nature’s hermit crab abandons its shell each time it needs a larger one, so too does mankind abandon its wares. But Joseph Kim is a reclaimer. Thus, these chairs are created of man’s leavings: used tires and ceramic. It’s eco-harmony.

Solar Powered Lights Just Chillin

Solar Powered Lights Just Chillin

In a very real way, shoes tied together by their laces and tossed up and around telephone wires identify the inner city, all around the world. Here, in this project that goes by the name Hanguenado, these shoes, or symbols of shoes, have the opportunity to represent something very different. Designed by [A]rmada, this project consists of two wooden light-boxes tied together by a cord that allows them to adapt to any given environment or use. Sustainable, cute, and lovely.

State Of The Arm

State Of The Arm

We’ve got a secret. We’ve been quietly working with AEG on a new blog called “State of the Arm“, proving the arm is a wonderful piece of engineering – one that has solved many conundrums in our mechanical world. Look around you. I’m sure you could find an “arm” to many of the ordinary objects in your home. It’s just too good of a design template, so good that when AEG needed to design a new spray arm for their dishwasher – guess where they looked to.

Energia!

Energia!

The Viva Light Tower is a lamp post but totally independent from the grid. It derives its power from three natural sources; sun, wind, and biochemical. Seems like an interesting idea but looks quite expensive to implement, but hey – lamp posts and street lights need a massive upgrade if we’re to cut emissions by the year 2020. This is one idea that could see our way there.

Shoes That Clean The Floor

Shoes That Clean The Floor

The FOKI is a floor cleaning shoe, yea you read that correctly. It has two rotary cleaners underneath each shoe to sweep up dust and kill bacteria. They’re cordless but there’s a LED display on the side to indicate battery levels. It sounds weird but if I shut my eyes really hard to imagine the possibilities of clean floors with every step, I’m sold. I hate sweeping – please, anything to make cleaning less tedious.

One Album Band Aid

One Album Band Aid

The Skinny Player kinda reminds me of the O+ Music Campaign where the promotional kit offers one song in various mediums. The concept here with the Skinny Player is to offer one album space on a portable – Band Aid-esque device. The self-sticking player houses a play/stop button and flexible speakers. Although I am not so sure about the sound quality for the output, but the idea is worth exploring. The user-scenario is for exercise or such places where you want to keep your hands free, but still carry your music with you.
