Cocoon on Wheels

Cocoon on Wheels

The name of this project is the “Hyundai Aebulle” concept car, and it’s designed by Shane Baxley. The word Aubulle, when translated directly from Korean, means “cocoon.” When you are in the cocoon, you are definitely cocooned. A sort of lay-down seating situation with the vehicle wrapped all around you. Cruising through the streets on a luge of Aubulle. The mobility and speed of a motorcycle with a cocoon-like safety for the body of the driver. Plus super fabulous light strips.

Japanese Wooden Sandal Update

Japanese Wooden Sandal Update

They don’t have rockets, they don’t transform into anything, and no, they do not have ice skates pop out the bottom of them.* What they DO have is a couple lovely innovations that designer Silvialy Tjhin was ever-so-thoughtful to include. Silvialy Tjhin created these in a class whilst at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where in a Methods & Materials class, was going through a lesson on woodworking machines, and Tjhin, being an ever-so-clever utilitarian, created a pair of shoes.

Bubbly Soundscape

Bubbly Soundscape

Inspired by J. Cage’s Inlets (1977), this carafe set, part of a collection called Domestic Soundscape, uses the idea of sound and water to create a bubbly rhythm from the simple act of pouring. As the main chamber of water fills the smaller chambers, a bubbling sound resonates to reinforce that yes, you are about to drink something. Hmm, celebrating the beauty in everyday rituals I guess. Why not right?

Drag That Dress

Drag That Dress

Look, if you’re a chic, nomadic traveler, you can’t be bothered with traditional luggage and bags. The Dragging Dress is some strange rolling skirt hiding a pretty substantial carrier in a big ass bustle. Only captain oblivious wouldn’t notice this mass protruding from your rear but hey, at least you can really live up to that saying, “girl got a lotta junk in her trunk.” Fo’ real tho.

Caution! Not Slippery When Singing!

Caution! Not Slippery When Singing!

Come weekends and street bands are out in full force, trying to impress and maybe cajole a Dollar or two out of you. Besides carrying an array of equipments, have you noticed how they try and add a zing to their show with wee bit of histrionics? The Look! Speakers can add the zing without much fuss, naturally you’re going to notice the caution-sign, but only this time, it will be hooked up to the mike / instrument of a performer! Awesome!

Pen Is Mightier Than The Bullet

Pen Is Mightier Than The Bullet

Being in the writing business I know the power of words and at times, the pen is mightier than the sword. Inspired by this is Choose Your Bullets – a desk accessory that is a constant reminder of the corruption, bad decisions and violence, which plague our society and everyday life. Currently retailing in Mexico, each serial-engraved piece is awaiting your decision for the day…violence or the pen?

Ball Pillow Conglomerate

Ball Pillow Conglomerate

This is a ball pillow project like I’ve never seen before. It’s probably the best ball pillow project I’ve had the pleasure of writing about all year. It’s the “Daydreamer” furniture piece by Feng, Cheng-Tsung and Lin, Kai-Ting. Made from artificial fur, low-density foam, high-density foam, and canvas, these balls, like most balls in all forms of course, are made to work with one another.

Like a Mass of Firebugs

Like a Mass of Firebugs

Here’s an interactive lighting project you’ll love to wash your body in. Run through it, wave your hands around in it, and do some pretty ballet twirls around it. It’s called “Firefly” and it’s designed by Kkristen and Vincent Moreau. You can dance around in it and it will dance right back. This, what I’d call installation art, plays with you as if it were a mass of firefly insects flying about you, reacting in real time to the movements you make. Installed currently at Shanghai World Expo 2010.

Water Zoomin with Personal Propeller

Water Zoomin with Personal Propeller

Do you ever get tired of floating along on your water raft, having to use your hands and feet to get around? Here’s the key for you! This is the “Inflatable Water Propeller” by Chao-yang Chou and Sian-Zong Chen. It propels you through the water. It can also sit still while you chill in the water. This first one includes the inflatable air cushion that attaches to it. Burn your skin all day, floating about, or use this device to rock and roll. What you do is hold on tight and let the propeller JAM you through the waves. Speedily!

The Vitamins In Google Are So Good For You

The Vitamins In Google Are So Good For You

Brand power is everything in business and some people know how to milk it best. Sony, Microsoft, Apple, and our favorite Google…powerful names that carry a lot of weight. In the concept-design-world, the trick to get noticed is not to associate the brands with the obvious. For example, concept  Sony gadgets have been done to death, but a Google Envelope will attract more attention. Likewise having jaded Hollywood actresses sell fountain of youth pills pales in comparison to Google selling Vitamins.

Browse the iTunes App store and you’ll see there really is an app for everything. Take for instance the Make Coffee app, a slick virtual coffee maker. If you can’t make that real cup of joe, well this is next to the best thing. In fact it was so wildly successful with more than 10,000 downloads, the makers are working on a REAL ITALIAN STYLE COFFE MAKER wirelessly controlled by your iPhone. HELLO NURSE!

Flat And Folding

Flat And Folding

The Flexible Speaker for the iPhone is quite a departure from conventional speaker styles. More like a pretty hanging charm on the phone, this device makes use of “Flat Flexible Laminated, (FFT) Loudspeaker technology” to its advantage. Read: paper-thin & foldable. The folding aspect is relevant; coz with each un-fold of the connecting speaker, the volume goes up. Charming!
