My Chair Is Alive

If this were a horror movie, it would give me the creeps to announce a chair that comes to life when touched. But this isn’t the movies and we are discussing innovative design! The Astonishing Jack is basically a stool that blooms into a chair when it comes into human contact. Weird? Nope just interactive thinking and loads of fun!

Its an fun idea. However, its not a very user friendly concept or design – hide a chair, who's going to sit in it? This also brings up issues of unwanted interactions with nearby furniture and open space. You need to give this thing a bit of berth if its sitting in your living room. Ergonomically speaking, well, lets not.

  • I hate to keep tearing apart designs, but it looks like there is 5 to 1 leverage on the arms vs the base, and similar on the back. This can be kind of difficult, as the arms and back both are held in place by the weight of the user’s bottom, and physically remove weight from the bottom. The more weight you put on the arms or back, the less the chair can support you in those ways. Shift too much in the chair, and the entire thing collapses.

Beautiful idea, though. I suspect a full-sized model would either help hammer out the aforementioned problems, or would encourage the production of a hydraulic version.

    Big scale discrepancy between pictures…

    • Hartigan says:

      I disagree with you.

Watch the video. Concept and prototype does not need to be the same scale.

      • Arthur says:

@Patrick: I don’t understand what you are saying… Everything (pictures and mock-ups) have the same proportions… The mock-up is just a small scale version and works exactly the same way as a scale 1 version…

I love the idea of furniture that reacts to human interaction, however the mechanical systems there just screamed “PINCH OFF A CHILD’S FINGER!!”

    scary as hell.

What if you actually want a stool? Will it collapse under you, or is there a lock?
