While You Were Trying To Get Some Sleep On The Bus…
Someone stole your bag, kids sitting next seat were screaming, the nap in the bus sucked and now you have a muscle pull in the neck! Ah so many reasons, but the situation still remains unresolved; how do you catch your forty winks during a commute? Easy, you need a Napper! It’s a set of comfy hooded shawl with concealed earphones (that work with Bluetooth), combined with a Bluetooth lock for your luggage, and NapApp. Intrigued? Hit the jump for more info…
- Napper aims especially at sleeping in public transport.
- It consists of a hood, whose padding makes it comfortable to lean against window panes.
- It‘s wide cut and the scarf make it possible for you to shield yourself from the environment and create your own private cocoon.
- Bluetooth headphones are integrated in the hood, which, together with software for the mobile phone, provide sound to fall asleep with.
- The entire system is foldable into a compact bag and can be easily used for daily commuting as well as for longer.
- The hood‘s inlay is padded with 3Mesh material, which has a soft cushioning effect and high shock absorption against the vibrating windows.
- On the outer side of the headphones is covered in Sorbothane, a plastic foil which has noise absorbing properties.
- Inside the hood, Napcap‘are integrated Bluetooth headphones which, together with the traveler’s mobile phone, play music, send the wake-up alarm and the warning signal, in case the traveler’s luggage is moved.
- The headphones can easily be taken out of the hood, when you want to wash it.
- Small LED lights on the headphones give information about the remaining battery life and Bluetooth connection. The headphones lithium-polymer-battery is charged via USB, which is integrated in the headphone and can simply be plugged into your computer. There is also a mini-jack on the headphones, if you want to use them with a device which doesn’t support Bluetooth.
- To ensure a carefree sleep, the hood NapCap comes together with the luggage lock NapSecure. It doesn‘t only lock your luggage, but is connect to your mobile phone via Bluetooth. If the luggage should be moved away from its owner further than one meter, he will be warned by an alarm on his headphones, his mobile phone and the lock itself.
- The lock can be opened by using your mobile phone, but also through a mechanical lock, in case your battery is low or your phone is lost.
- The Bluetooth lock is charged, same as the headphones, using an integrated USB port. The luggage lock and the headphones communicate via Bluetooth with the software NapApp which can be installed as well on touchscreen as on keyboard mobile phones.
- Next to the control of the luggage lock, it contains a alarm clock which helps to wake up at according to your preferred time, location (if the mobile supports GPS) or sleep stage. With the help of a reaction game, which should be played directly after waking up, the software analyses how recreational your nap was and whether or not you should shorten or extend your next nap. Furthermore the software has a build in voice recorder, to capture the ideas you have just before dozing off.

awesome product and design!!!
Masha says
Hmmm. If I tried using this where I live, it would go like this:
Just as I was dropping off, some one would steal my bag. The “luggage lock” would set the alarm of via my cellphone, and they would turn back and collect my phone as well…
Simone says
Thanks for all the compliments! Unfortunately it’s not produced yet, but in case you now some interested companies, let me know!
@Masha: Sorry ’bout that. Where do you live???
Masha says
@ Simone
I live in Cape Town. I generally try not to sleep on public transport
Hunter says
Amazingly well thought out concept.. not sure if there’s enough demand, but I could see this as a product.
Sean says
It’s called a hoodie. Unless you are going to add some more padding, there is no reason for anyone who has a hooded sweatshirt to use this over what they currently have. Consider marketing to kids whose parents want them to sleep on car rides. Otherwise, just make a hoodie with the additional padding, that way it wouldn’t be weird to carry around.
Simone says
the padding actually does a pretty good job, just the way it is right now. because of the way i put the seams on it, it just doesn’t look that fat and akward. and there’s of course no padding in the part overlapping your face, just on the sides and the back where you would actually lean on.

I LOVE IT
i’m constantly using public transport and this would be a life changer.
i would love for it to be produced for real!
it would be amazing

Why it’s not produced yet???

I really hope you find a company to produce this. I know so many people who would love to have one and would be willing to spend a good chunk of change on it. There are so many frequent travelers (both short term commuters and long distance business/personal travelers) that would benefit.
Stephan says
In general I’m not really font of WT concept, but this one I like a lot. @sean Why this is better than integration in a hoody? Simple enough, noone will wear the same hoody every day, so you’d either have to buy a whole range of hoodies with this pad integrated or you’d have this with you only once in a while. This NapCap on the other hand you can take with you as an accessory every day.
Great concept Simone, hope you’ll get a company to get this to market!
kei says
good idea!
But, how do you defend people from coping it?
Say people in China, especially they get some competitive advantage by offering way lower price?

This is so cute bluetooth models.

It would get knocked off, but so did the snuggie. Whomever may be interested probably is already involved in the off shore manufacturing process. Otherwise, it would be marketable as Made in the USA. This is a fantastic idea. You could have the alarm/lock/headphones be optional to appeal to a broader pricing spectrum. Wish this were out for the holidays and winter – sigh. It really had my hopes up!

Hope someone can update when it does.

I’ll buy 2 please!! I realize you’re looking for a producer, but are you selling the Napper on Etsy or from your own web site in the meantime? I Need one to give as a Christmas gift!! The Napper is perfect for long flights, car pooling, road trips, the tram or even at the beach to shield you from the sun & keep your mobile device cool.
Two bits of advice tho. First, make certain you’re patented! It’s such a great idea, you don’t want someone stealing & profiting from your hard work. Second, try the TV show “Shark Tank”
I wish you the best of Luck!!!

This would work just as well for people like me who carpool to campus and nap in the public areas between morning classes. Our campus was fairly safe until last month we had a rash of backpack thefts. Luckily the thief was caught, but still, I have to loop my arm through my backpack and I’m still not comfortable anymore because if I’m really tired I’m a heavy sleeper.
Kelly says
Ok so it’s now 2012 going on 2013
Will this ever be for sale? Where can I buy one before I just decide to make my own?
Jessica says
Yeah seriously, i want one too! this would make bus trips and plane rides sooo much more comfortable and relaxing!!
Will this be available for purchase?? Or can you sell them on etsy.com or somewhere like that?
Chloe says
I travel on airplanes a lot for very very long distances. And I would love to have this! Way better than a neck pillow that I can never get in the right spot and a hoodie that doesn’t have enough padding. Someone needs to make this! I know lots of other people that would love this as well!!!!
Katka says
Do a kickstarter!!! I’d buy this in a heartbeat!!!

Hey guys, thanks so much for encouraging comments! I did have a small test serie produced right after this university project was done, but after several iterations, the seamstresses still didn’t get the padding right. The one in the pictures is the prototype I did by hand.
After that I started a fulltime job and moved to another town and didn’t have the time to pick it up again

Sad you didn’t move forward with this. It’s so hard to get something like this into production. Maybe could have done some market research and found companies in the protective weather gear outerwear business. North face? Add a thin waterproof fabric to the outside and you have a quick rain hood if you forgot your umbrella. Offer in different colors/ fabric prints? Personalized with monogram? Maybe the 31 company that makes handbags with different prints? Sadly the patent system is changed now. (As of this past Saturday). It’s no longer a first to invent system but rather a first to file. Complicated, but if someone copies your design and gets a thorough patent filed before you, you are SOL. It makes sharing like this a risky thing. The kick starter suggestion was a great one if done back then. But don’t blame her folks. A good attorney to file paperwork is very expensive. Starting a full time job and moving while financing this project would be very difficult and risky. Very best strategy is sell idea and rights to a big company but this will get difficult with the changes.

I travel by air A LOT and would love something that helped me sleep as well as privacy. The other features are an added bonus. I never sleep on public transit without practically handcuffing my stuff to me so I would use it to lean on without the hood. I take it this is still not for sale so I’ll just leave a couple comments. I like Margo’s idea for it to have a waterproof layer. You never know when you’ll get stuck in rain. Also, I didn’t notice if there’s a pillow on both sides. If not I would suggest it would so no matter what side of the transit you are there is a cushion. Please sell this! I know people who work for an airline and they travel all the time and would use this. Unfortunately, I am in the medical field and do not know the markets and people to help you.
Caro says
If you kickstart this it will get funded.
