Is Mongolia the hot spot for fringe architects? #27 of the Ordos Project in Inner Mongolia sets up another precedent for avant garde but functional design. We recently wrote about #35 of the Ordos Project – an underground home that takes advantage of the ground’s natural insulation. #27 deals with the extreme elements by a “skin and lung” concept.

Architects have a long history designing great lighting. Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture out of Sweden picks up this line by giving us the Paperfold lamp series. Inspired by the paper patterns Fredrik Kjellgren’s grandmother taught him to make clothes from, the lamps all use a single and simple folded paper form, and then stretch, duplicate, or suspend the fold in various ways to make different lamps.

Kid = Never ending Demand For NEW Toys! This equation holds true in all homes, however designer Frantz Lasorne has an excellent project for us that gives a second lease of life to the existing toy collection. Called Augmented Reality, the project combines the joys of virtual reality, imagination and tangible toys. Using Augmented Reality Tangible User Interface (AR TUI) via head-mounted glasses, loads of imagination and old toys, a new environment is created that allows a child to live his fantasies.

We are not living in a Yellow Submarine, but you can store your info on a green, white, red or black one if you like. The K-95 USB Flash Drive is waterproof; Jeeze its a submarine for crying out loud! It comes in two models that take in 1GB or 2GB of info at 8 MB/sec. It’s Kitsch and trendy, so if you really want to accessorize your comp, go ahead and add this concept to your imaginary collection!

Keyboard and Words are my friends and we often play hide-and-seek when I do my posts. They either hide behind Mr. Wrong Spellings or screen behind Ms. Metal Block’s skirt. At such moments I turn to my other pal Mr. Mouse for some help. A right click, scrolling and some serious threatening and pesto they come out of hiding! All this fun is missed when I’m forced to use pen and paper! Wait a minute IDEA tells me they gotta Dictionary Pen for me that’s equally fun…hmmm…interesting!

Wrath on all imitators! Behold a real Nooka wristwatch. Here we’ve got 100% real, accept no substitutes, brand name you can trust, love and devotion produced Nooka watch. It’s a “luxury” digital watch called “ZON.” It’s a world time watch with graph display and number display for time. Note: This post is pre-cursor to our up-and-coming collaboration with Nooka that will ultimately result in a Nooka Giveaway!

Ask Charles Wood of Worrell Design and he’ll say hell yes! TDK Trans-it Edge makes other USB sticks look like fashion rejects. Given that storage devices are seen as a impulse purchase, the packaging was as important as the drive itself. With this in mind he designed the packaging simultaneously with the drive.

Unlike the ubiquitous Emo culture – this lightweight all electric cart called the E’mo is a lot cooler to be seen with around town. It’s extremely lightweight (325 kg) with a fold down top for hair raising driving; good weather permitting of course. A series of Li-on batteries powers the tiny electric motor propelling you at 80 km/h at top speeds. Want one? Gotta live in Europe with 10,000 Euros in the bank.

Plot #35 of the Ordos Project is not your typical villa. You won’t find it in Spain, France, or Italy. This one is in Inner Mongolia. The flat landscape is known for some of the most amazing blue skies on Earth but living there is harsh with high winds and extreme temperature grades.

Oh Crap! Are we seriously talking about toilets today? Yeah we are, but in a very different way! Ok, lets get a bit sophisticated and discuss the most important quarters of our abode in a very designer-ish manner. The place where we do our unloading, washing, cleaning and kinky-stuff, is often neglected due to our hectic pace. Vertigo Nystagmus is a woozy condition to have; however Nystagmus can be controlled when the eyes are open and fixed on some point. The Vertigo Nystagmus Glasses showcased here allow vanity even in pain! Ditching the usual dorky eyewear for these technical glasses will make you look and feel better. Made of five parts, the design includes a visor that can be manually removed. Infrared cams that track eye movement and 4 LEDs for soft illumination are all a part of this special eye gear.

For some reason I have a very soft corner for designer Mac Funamizu. I know sometimes his designs can get outlandish, but like I always say, you need to dream BIG to achieve something in life. His latest concept is a portable projector device that wraps around your hand like a bracelet. This modern bridge between the physical and digital world comes with a camera, a projector and WiFi. Interestingly he compares & names it after the beautiful white snake, SnowCorn.

Meet the Food You Eat is a kitchen scale that measures the environmental impact of food. The scale works by looking at the carbon emitted by transporting a particular product from its country of origin to Denmark. Place an RFID tagged product on the appropriate arm and try to balance the scale with the tree shaped weights. The amount of trees used to balance the scale represents the number of actual trees it would take to offset that product’s carbon emissions over one year.
