[...] Cases of expired products in supermarkets are not unknown and checking expiry dates is a continuous concern. Naoki Hirota has designed a very helpful freshness label that not only shows the expiry date but also makes the barcode non-scannable after expiry by using a non-toxic pigment that promptly covers the bars. It sounds like a good solution for sensitive products like meat or milk. Although there is a time transition that represents time as we get near expiry, it would be nice to have a serious warning (say in intense colour) if we are really close to expiry (one to two days). Supermarkets would probably not like this at all, but it would be a great way of avoiding products that will expire soon after we have put them in our fridge. [Yanko Design] [...]

Like Uli said. variations of this exist. I even saw it in practice almost 10 years ago in a small speciality food store. It was a sticker that slowly changed color as it reacted to the air. I guess the amount of time it took the dye to change corresponded close enough to the expiration of the prepared foods.

Regardless of whether this is new or not, I have to say it is a good idea.
