Optimus Tactus
I am not talking about a new Transformer Robot, but about a new design concept from Artemy Lebedev. The Optimus Tactus is a touch surface keyboard- Think ipod Touch, but as a keyboard. This little beauty is programmable to be a keyboard, a video player or can be programmed for what you would like for it to be for you.

such a bullshit: use sensitive screen instead
Nacon says
Well duh… how else would something like that work anyway? Unless you got a better idea?
( Only downside I’d have with this concept is the tactile input feedback, knowing if you actually pressed it or not…. maybe play key tones at each keystroke? )

alpines pulsetouch type ‘tech’ is what i imagine this would have. it would feel like constantly popping bubblewrap while you typed
Canastrophy says
Bubblewrap? I smell a minigame for that keyboard…

Beautiful design.

This will NEVER work because it is so difficult to type on a keyboard without tactile feedback.

Agree, I also like the sound that the keys make when they are pressed. I can actually tell when I miss a lette or make a mistaker by the rhythm and speed of my typing.

I agree, you need feedback to write without seeng the keyboard. I think they never read about a thing called ergonomics. By the way this is nice for magazines and to play for a while (lets say 5 minutes).

Absolutely lame

This wouldnt be the ideal keyboard if all you do is type, because there is no tactile feedback. But this would definately be a great way to save time when using Photoshop or Illustrator. You could assign it to show a color palette and shortcuts to the tools, as shown on the first pic here, or you could put play/pause , fast forward, and rewind buttons with a volume slider when playing your itunes library.

Lame?????
Funny to hear how many people thought the iPhone was lame. Love or hate it, everyone talks about it, and millions bought it. These new inventions may not be everyones cup of tea, but it inspires others to build off of that technology and come up with great new ways to interact with technology. In my opinion, this keyboard happens to be one of them.
Keep the ideas flowing! GREAT WORK

I agree with the ideas flowing concept. I don’t agree that something is good if everyone buys it… The good or not good design of things is in the time they keep being used and useful. I think that’s not a bad idea but the execution is not well accomplished. And that’swhat makes a good design.

what if you accidentally laid your wrists on like space and the bottom row of keys? that might be messy
jucaro says
just put haptic technology to give it tactile feedback and this keyboard will rock!
kheeeee says
wow some of your opinions are just horrible lol
i think this is a great design and even better product if produced
and as for tactile feedback, it can just be mimicked by using the same tones
great work Ansley

lame. this is not innovation. it’s like you make a iphone app that shows a keyboard on the screen and then all it a keyboard, it’s stupid.
Tomasz says
Making this keyboard is possible, its a great idea. a person doesn’t need a textile surface to type, one just needs to train oneself to keep the hands relaxed and still while just moving the fingers.
I cant wait to own one of these when they come out on the market.
Colin says
If a keyboard can do all those functions..
Why not make it a small portable one sheet laptop?
jdi says
Because they got stucked in the keyboard preconcept. Design is going a step further.
